So long-time pokemon player here, but new to insurgence. Anyways, some of the challenges look interesting, but I was wondering if I should do a regular playthrough first in case the challenges cause me to miss anything. I was thinking of doing the Nuzlocke and randomizer challenges for the first playthrough. Is this advised against?
It’s best to not do a challenge on your first, blind play-through of the game. If you already know the general storyline or you want to kill time until the next update after your first run, then you should try out some of the challenges.

It’s recommended the you do not do a challenge run on your first play through, and definitely not a randomiser. But seriously, it’s your choice. But, don’t do a randomiser on your first run, it kind of ruins the story when all the villains and gym leaders have completely random teams.
If you want to increase difficulty you can just turn hard mode on in options. If you wan’t to increase it futher you can go for some challenges but don’t go for Egglocke and Randomized ones as you can’t forfeit them, they disable online trading and battling and they upset game balance.
Also, it’s worth pointing out that there were rewards (shiny legendary pokes) for completing challenges in Zeta/Omicron (which were made by the same people that work on Insurgence) so it might be the same here (once we get version 1.2+).
