Subsequently: Reasonable Path for Nuzlocke Hard (part 2)

I. Introduction

Nuzlocke here is pretty tough on hard difficulty, basically due to the level caps. It is tough at the start too.

The most interesting part though is that Nuzlocke increases variations immensely (you have to use the Pokemon you would have never played).

However, we may lack some variation at the beginning, thus we may fail before the diversity comes into force.

So if you struggle, then this guide might be helpful for you.

Winning Nuzlocke (unreasonably)
  • Nuzlocke Easy or Nuzlocke Normal
    • start your game
    • at Telnor Town (or anywhere) interact with TV, catch Rotom
    • use DexNav (press D), find Youngster (the last), use Rotom to win fights against level 50 Rattata (that cannot hit ghosts). Overlevel to win fights. If DexNav is not good for you, overlevel fighting wild Pokemons. A bit later use Secret Base to overlevel and win. The last ultimate challenge is Elite Four/League though.
  • Nuzlocke Hard
    • start your game
    • if your first Route 1 encounter is not Meowth or Bunnelby, restart the game, otherwise catch
    • if caught Meowth or Bunnelby doesn’t have Pickup Ability, restart the game, otherwise
    • if Meowth or Bunnelby has Pickup ability, fight for a hundred of hours to get 120 Rare Candies or more. Overlevel to win fights. The last ultimate challenge is Elite Four though.

Therefore, using Rare Candies for Nuzlocke runs might probably be not ok. Though it is sometimes tempting to overcome the level cap. Like Magikarp Rare Candy from 19 to 20 to evolve to Gyarados against a hard fight at Ancient Ruins.

Reasonable path to success is trickier and might need some good team consistency, which is the focus of the article.

II. Starting tips, rules, tricks

  1. Increase the speed of your game.
Press M several times to accelerate the game and press S to autorun.

  2. The Nuzlocke rules are standard:

  • any fainted Pokemon cannot be used
  • catch the first creature you see (the location is indicated at profile-card)
  • no dupes (you skip Pokemon you already have in Pokedex, probably including potential evolutions)
  1. You can stick to a reasonable approach.
So if there is a way to get the same result with an extensive grind or without it, it is reasonable to choose the latter (bearing in mind that if needed, you could have grinded). Therefore:
  • 3.1. Reasonable: The challenge starts once you get Pokeballs (not to lose a Shade Forest encounter).
Alternative: Use repel that you can find at Darkrai’s, to avoid ambiguety, if you wish

  • 3.2. Reasonable: To level up quicker get a guaranteed Rotom. Then use DexNav (press D), find Youngster (the last), use Rotom to win fights against level 50 Rattata (that cannot hit ghosts).
Tedious alternative: level up in grass

  • 3.3. Reasonable: Use DexNav fights described earlier to get coins.
Tedious alternative: sell everything from Rock Smash (guaranteed Riolu at Ancient Ruins)

  • 3.4. Reasonable: The place where you get the Pokemon is written in description.

    • So your Starter is from Pokelab and Rotom is from Telnor Town, different places, according to the description.
If by any chance you consider that illegal, get Rotom at Midna Town instead
    • So your Shieldon is from Secret Base.
If by any chance you consider that illegal, get nothing from Midna Mine if you think the Armor Fossil is from there
    • Based on the description you have to take only one Hidden Grotto (so Durant and no Delta Munchlax in this case)
    • Based on the description some gift or static encounters seem like count (though some consider them “free” to take, but up to you to choose)
    • Based on the description to avoid ambiguety hatch your eggs at the same location where you get them
  • 3.5. Reasonable: Save before the first Hidden Grotto. Enter. If no Durant, reload, and reload until you see Durant, since the strategy is heavily based on Durant.
Alternative: Return in 12 hours each time until you find Durant. Anyway you are not obliged to take any static encounter you don’t want, are you?

  1. You can catch Pokemons using Dupe Clause and Repel Trick
  • 4.1. Dupe Clause means that there is supposed to be only one of each Pokemon in your team. Therefore, you can manipulate the order of encounters to get the desired Pokemon. A typical example is to catch Magikarp anywhere, and then to catch Qwilfish from Telnor Cave (though you have to use Repels all your way at Telnor Cave in order not to ruin your strategy, since you are supposed to catch the first Pokemon you see!).

  • 4.2. If it comes to Repel Trick, you should remember that Repel is effective against Pokemon of the level lower than your leading Pokemon.
So you can manipulate and get a better guaranteed Pokemon if you use Repel and have the leading Pokemon of the needed level.
A typical example is Riolu at Ancient Ruins that has a low encounter rate but becomes your guaranteed first encounter there with 18-19 level leading Pokemon + Repel active.

  1. Special catching strategy
  • Use a lot of Repels to skip wild encounters at locations. The order of catching is strict to make the game easier
  • If you see Dark Cave Abra, use Dusk Ball (from Ancient Ruins) to avoid Teleport
  • If you see Dark Cave Zubat, Axew uses False Swipe, Delta Bulbasaur uses Hypnosis (or Rotom uses Thunder Wave which is slightly worse), use Friend Ball (from Suntouched City) to friend-evolve to Crobat at lvl 23
  • If you still have Friend Balls at Ancient Ruins for Riolu, Axew uses False Swipe, Delta Bulbasaur uses Hypnosis (or Rotom uses Thunder Wave which is slightly worse), use Friend Ball (from Suntouched City) to friend-evolve to Lucario in 7 levels at 25-26 level (1000 steps =+1 Happiness with ~99.5% chance, or 3000 steps =+3 Happiness = 1 level, but running is not practical). Remember: Riolu appears in grass after your win at Ancient Ruins!
  • Togepi can go to an ordinary ball, not Friend Ball
Maths & Small Guide to Happiness/Friendship from the game start

A. Why Happiness/Friendship

  • Return move (with 255 max pts Return=102 power, or bp)
  • Evolution by Friendship (220 pts, Return=88 bp).

B. Changing starting Happiness/Friendship

  • Normal catching gives base, usually 70 Friendship, (Return=28 bp), but may vary (github/essentials/gen6)
  • Hatched egg (at level 1) gives 120 happiness (Return=48 bp)
  • Friend Ball (you get 3 at Suntouched City before you can buy at Helios City) gives 200 friendship (Return=80 bp)

C. Changing given Happiness/Friendship

  • EV-lowering berries (unavailable until Helios City)
  • Running (no consistency):
    • 0-199 = 50% chance of +2 running 128 steps,
    • 200-255 = 50% chance of +1 running 128 steps.
      => 1000 steps =+ Happiness with ~99.5% chance
    • Levelling up (best):
      • 0-99 = +5 pts/lvl,
      • 100-199 = +4 pts/lvl,
      • 200-255 = +3 pts/lvl.

D. Calculations for levelling up

  • From Base (70)
    • Max Friendship (255) = +50 lvls.
    • Friendship evolution (220) = +38 lvls.
  • From Hatched Egg (120, lvl 1)
    • Max Friendship (255) = +39 lvls (at lvl 40).
    • Friendship evolution (220) = +27 lvls (at lvl 28).
  • From Friend Ball (200)
    • Max Friendship (255) = +19 lvls.
    • Friendship evolution (220) = +7 lvls.

Therefore, if you wish to evolve before Helios City:

  • not guaranteed Zubat needs Friend Ball to evolve in 19 levels,
  • guaranteed Riolu needs Friend Ball to evolve in 19 levels,
  • guaranteed Togepi can be in normal Pokeball and will evolve at level 28.

III. Catching order for Nuzlocke encounters + level caps

Order tables of guaranteed encounters (to have fewer faints).
There are two types of tables.

  • Less thinking, decent options
0) Ordinary path (=100%)
  • Less variety: Riolu and Dratini, but no Dark Cave, Pancham, Delta Aipom

Variaty tips
  • you can still get Suntouched City Delta Aipom if you get Route 2 Remoraid (30%) [because Shade Forest will give Magikarp guaranteed by Dupe Clause]
  • you can still get Cyan Cavern Pancham if you get any Midna Mine sturdy/Carbink (54.25%) [because sturdy/Carbink may work better than Relicanth]
  • since you may lack Pokemons at the start, then Dark Cave Old Rod may be better here
  • since you lack Pokemons at the start, then Route 1 grass encounter may be better. Though there is an interesting option for Delta Dwebble.
Instead of a guaranteed Metchi Town Tentacool and Route 1 random grass you can get a guaranteed Route 5 Croconaw. Just to breed a Totodile egg at Metchi Town to trade at Route 1 for Delta Dwebble.
However, that is not guaranteed due to Croconaw’s gender and may partially break the “Dupe Clause” (same evolution line on the one hand, but unique Pokemon on the other hand), but still an interesting matter to consider
  • you can potentially get a guaranteed Timburr at Suntouched Exitway with Repel Trick and 18 level leading Pokemon. Though you may lack priority egg move Mach Punch (cannot get egg moves on successive catching using your DexNav at the location since Nuzlocke first encouner rule).
You can get Timburr directly instead of Suntouched Exitway Shellder or indirectly instead of Ancient Ruins Riolu [if getting Ancient Ruins Magikarp and Midna Garden Shellder guaranteed by Dupe Clause]. However, the tradeoff is not really great since all of them (compared to Timburr) are slightly better strategy-wise
  • More thinking, better results
1) Full success (≈46%)
  • Perfect variety: Dark Cave, Riolu, Pancham, Delta Aipom, Dratini = 46.47175% chance
  • a) got lucky either with Route 2 Remoraid (to guarantee Shade Forest Magikarp) or with Shade Forest Magikarp [1 - 0.7×0.3 = 0.79]
  • b) got lucky either with Dark Cave Geodude Sturdy or Midna Mine Rock Smash any with Sturdy/Carbink [1 - (0.8+0.2/2)×(0.915/2) = 1 - (0.9×0.4575) = 0.58825]
