Patch 1.2.3, How does it work?

So… I have the 1.2.3 core, but I don’t know if I still need the patch. If I do, how does it work? Does it transfer my data?

If you have the core, you don’t have to patch. On windows, the save will transfer automatically. On mac, you can transfer it manually.
