Analyzing Mega Froslass

Mega Froslass is an interesting pokemon that I haven’t really seen anyone talking about. Lets get into it.

Typing: Ice / Ghost - Not great. It gets immunities to Normal and Fighting, as well as resistances to Poison, Bug, and Ice, but gets weaknesses to Rock, Ghost, Steel, Fire, and Dark.

Base Stats: Parentheses for after mega evolution.
HP: 70 (70)
Atk: 80 (80)
Def: 70 (85)
SpA: 80 (120)
SpD: 70 (105)
Speed: 110 (120)

Pretty great in my opinion. It’s bulk is pretty decent (its defense gets better with its ability), and it has a really good special attack and speed which allows it to outspeed most pokemon.

Ability:
Fur Coat - Extremely good ability. This allows its defense to double, which significantly hurts its one weakness to bulk.
(No snow teams are really viable in this meta, so I wouldn’t recommend going Snow Cloak. Cursed Body is decent)

Moveset:
Pretty good moveset overall. It gets access to Ice Beam which is a super good STAB move, as well as Shadow Ball which is great. Also gets access to Thunderbolt which is an excellent coverage move. If a defensive build was used, you can utilize Will-O-Wisp, Confuse Ray, and Spikes.

Movesets

Special Sweeper

Froslass @ Froslassite
Ability: Cursed Body (Fur Coat)
Modest / Timid Nature
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Speed

  • Ice Beam
  • Shadow Ball
  • Thunderbolt
  • Destiny Bond / HP Ground
Set Notes: In my opinion this has to be the best set of them all. Pretty straightforward, switch in and wreck havoc with Bolt/Beam or Shadow Ball. Destiny Bond can be used if the pokemon is about to die as Mega Froslass can outspeed most pokemon in the metagame. Spikes can also be used to surprise against switch ins.
Physically Defensive

Froslass @ Frosslassite
Ability: Cursed Body (Fur Coat)
Bold Nature
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

  • Will-O-Wisp
  • Spikes
  • Hex
  • Taunt?
Set Notes: Not sure how I would run this set, I think it could be viable though.

I would go for Hex over Confuse ray for the defensive set. The Ice/Ghost typing isn’t great as a defensive typing, but it can do the job. The rest-talk set is pretty bad actually because its starying power is not as good as we would think. You probably would get more success using the special sweeper who can also serves as an offensive spikes user.
