Analyzing Delta Luxray

Pretty interesting Pokemon overall, with a unique ability. Let’s get into it.

Typing: Steel/Poison - Pretty good defensively, but struggles offensively. It is immune to Poison, and resistant to Normal, Flying, Bug, Ice, Dragon, Rock, and double resistant to Grass, Fairy, and Bug. In return, it has a 4x weakness to Ground which really hurts it and has a 2x fire weakness. Overall, good defensively, but bad for its stats.

Abilities:

  1. Vampiric - allows D. Luxray to regain 25% of damage inflicted when using a contact move. Fantastic ability, basically gives it a mini drain punch on every attack. One of the best in the game with a physical attacker.
  2. Venomous - Causes bad poison instead of regular poison. Pretty good ability with Toxic Spikes and Gunk Shot.
  3. Poison Touch - If made contact, it has a 30% chance to make the target poisoned. Not great compared to the other abilities, not much viability.

Base Stats:
HP: 80
Atk: 120
Def: 79
SpA: 95
SpD: 79
Spe: 70

Decent stats. Its Defenses are pretty horrible in 80/79/79 and it has a horrible speed stat, but pretty good attacks in 120/95.

Movepool:

For status moves it is pretty solid: it gets Toxic Spikes, Glare, Hone Claws, Bulk Up, Spikes, and Roar. I wouldn’t use other status moves, but they are others that could potentially be used.

For physical moves, Poison Jab / Gunk Shot, and Iron Head / Tail for STAB moves. It also gets Earthquake / Drill Run, Knock Off / Sucker Punch / Crunch, Rock Slide, and Superpower.

Pretty good moveset overall, gets what it needs. Now, let’s get to the sets!

Standard Set

Delta Luxray @ Leftovers
Ability: Vampiric
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def

  • Gunk Shot
  • Drill Run / Earthquake
  • Rock Slide
  • Superpower
Set Notes: This set gets a great amount of coverage and a lot of healing with leftovers and Vampiric. Moves can obviously swapped with Iron Head and Crunch or others if needed.
Bandray

Delta Luxray @ Choice Band
Ability: Vampiric
Adamant Nature
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe

  • Gunk Shot
  • Iron Head / Rock Slide
  • Superpower
  • Crunch / Knock Off / Sucker Punch / Drill Run
Set Notes: This Pokemon can generally be switched in to most moves, due to its good defenses. A band is used to boost its already great attack, and Vampiric is used to regain HP after a switch. Moves can be swapped based off what coverage or setup works best for your team.
Toxray

Delta Luxray @ Leftovers
Ability: Venomous
Bold / Lax Nature
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SpD / 4 Atk

  • Toxic Spikes
  • Roar
  • Glare / Knock Off
  • Protect / Gunk Shot
Set Notes: Toxic Spikes and Roar combine to force bad poisoning. With its great defensive typing, it works well with this set; however its bad defensive stats make it hard to utilize.
Other Options
  • With the ToxRay set, D. Luxio could potentially be used with an Eviolite.
  • You could run a set like the Standard one with Toxic Spikes as well, though I don’t recommend it as it functions best with one specific role.

Let me know how you think the analysis was; thanks!
