Hello!
My 13 year old has asked to play Pokemon Insurgence. At a glance it looks great with a few darker themes. But just wanted to get opinions from those who have actually played it!
What age is it suitable for?
What are the darker themes?
Anything not really appropriate for 13 years?
Does it have in game chat?
We’re a big fan of pokemon and have all the Nintendo games but this is a first for a fan made one!
Thanks for any help!
When you start the game, you will be given two options for the story: Traditional, and Dark.
Dark is very dark. It features lots of death and violence and isn’t really appropriate for a 13-year-old. Or adults, for that matter - not only because it’s needleslly dark, but because the writing just isn’t very good.
Traditional is much closer to an official pokemon game. It’s a bit darker than normal, featuring injury, loss, betrayal and body horror, but no on-screen deaths. In my opinion it feels like the edgiest official game I could ever imagine. I’d say it’s pitched at about the level of the more intense Miyazaki or Don Bluth films, so if you’d trust your 13-year-old to handle Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke or The Secret of NIMH, they should be fine playing on Traditional.
Just play traditional mode. Although really i think dark mode only gives off that vibe at the beginning ( i think like 2 deaths out 13 are actually permanent and ones not even confirmed there is breif blood at the start of the game and the “death” in it is usually just screen flash sprite is niw gine death is inferred). i do think dark mode is better writen (despite the pure amount of edge.) Because the stakes are a lot higher. In general this game feels like you start in a edgy 14 year old fanfic and as the game progresses it feels like that teenager grew up learned how to actually write then decided to finish the game. You can tell because after halfway through the gym traditional and dark are just exactly the same.
