Well, it’s not necessary per se but you need to synchronize sending the trade requests and discord helps out a lot. You can try trading on the forums, discord just makes it much easier. This post explains how to trade.
Also, trading or anything related to trades via PMs is agains the rules and will get you banned, just fyi if you didn’t know about it.
