Well, that’s pretty easily mistaken or missed, and you get final confirmation on entering the battle screen. In 1of4rocketbros guide to shiny hunting, he said “you have to go through a fair amount of dialogue, a nickname screen, and then wait for YOUR Pokemon to be sent out before being able to soft reset.”

Well, that isn’t true, once u pick your starter, u can see if its shiny from its over world sprite

It is outdated. In 1.2.5 it was changed so that your follower appears behind you immediately after you select it, which moved the soft reset point earlier.

When you pick the starter, it will start following you. You can see if it is shiny then.
