I never installed patches, I just downloaded the new core, and the save file automatically transfers over (as long as you have a PC). Not sure about mac.
What version do you have? If its 1.1.7 then you are up to date.
Are you on a Mac or on a PC? There are a lot of videos on Youtube that show you how to install it
